At which point Ryan said something about not having asked Neil to sing on one of his songs, and he didnt know the song, and and and and.Normal text size Larger text size Very large text size The Songwriters Circle is a long-running UK television show broadcast on the BBC, which brings together three well-known songwriters to perform their own songs, discuss their art and collaborate with each other. The shows most recent episode screened in the UK last weekend featured Grammy Award winning American folk-singer Janis Ian, New Zealands most famous export Neil Finn and ornery alt country poster-boy Ryan Adams.Awkward. Ryan Adams didnt make many friends during the taping of The Songwriters Circle.
According to comments posted on the Ryan Adams messageboard tobeyoung.org soon after the shows taping earlier this month, things didnt go very well for the younger singer. Fans leaving the show were first to suggest Adams was rude to the elder songwriters, with one fan posting on the messageboard, The ending made me just a tad embarrassed to be a Ryan fan. Another elaborated, suggesting the issue was Adams refusal to join in on the scripted collaboration, Finns Crowded House tear-jerker Fall At You Feet, saying Clearly Ryan wasnt interested in playing ball on Finns Fall at Your Feet in the encore. Finns a tough Kiwi and wasnt putting up with any perceived Ryan brat behaviour and called him out. Another claimed Adams went so far as to pack up his guitar while Finn and Ian performed a closing song as a duo. Soon afterwards, Adams himself went online to respond to the fan mutterings. Spelling his own - Ed): I was never asked to play on that song. It was not manditory to play on each others songs and I was respectful to both Neil and Janis by way of listening and enjoying their tunes. By the time the encore happened it was only to retape Neils song. That is not my business and why he decided it was I do not know. AfterFall At Your Feet Reduxe, the rest was not taped and we had been there onstage for 3 hours. Janis was very sweet by the way, she played a final tune and whatever daggers you think happened you were making that up. We were there all day planning for the show and at no time was I disrespectful of anyone. ![]() Ive had a copy of Try Whistling This in my computer since I can remember, and Fall At Your Feet is one of my favorite songs. He came prepared (played a lovely part on From Me to You and again on At 17, and knocked back a few really tasty blues riffs on the solo section of Bright Lights Promises), ready to interact and talk about songwriting in an open forum. Ryan Adams, meanwhile, is an extremely talented songwriter - beautiful, wonderful stuff - whose first words to us were that he didnt know why he was there. We heard numerous times that he writes 4-5 songs a day, that they just pour out of him, that hes the most unprepared person on earth and likes it that way, and that he sells out any theater he plays in the UK in 30 seconds flat. I dont expect complete and total self-absorption to the detriment of what was supposed to be 3 singersongwriters enjoying each other in a collaborative environment. I do that a lot in Nashville, as you all know, and Ive never in my life seen it go south like this did. In fairness to Neil, we had rehearsed the song more than any of the others, and it really wanted Ryans 2-3 line part in the choruses. Ryan didnt sing it during the show, and he didnt sing it when we went back to re-record (specifically so Ryan could sing it this time.) Im not sure what his problem was, but he would not sing the part hed sung so beautifully in rehearsal - in fact, he would not sing at all. And after seven hours of blistering heat backstage and in the hall, a bite or two of food our tour managers had to find for us (not the BBCs fault, we knew going in it was a tight budget), and some very frustrating interchanges, Neil finally lost it and asked Ryan in so many words why he couldnt just sing the song the way wed rehearsed it.
